The Dvorak Tropical Cyclone Intensity Estimation Technique

چکیده
T HE DVORAK TECHNIQUE LEGACY. The Dvorak tropical cyclone (TC) intensity estimation technique has been the primary method of monitoring tropical systems for more than three decades. The technique has likely saved tens of thousands of lives in regions where over one billion people are directly affected by TCs (commonly called hurricanes, typhoons, or cyclones). The Dvorak technique’s practical appeal and demonstrated skill in the face of tremendous dynamic complexity

An Evaluation of Dvorak Technique–Based Tropical Cyclone Intensity Estimates
The satellite-based Dvorak technique (DVKT) is the most widely available and readily used tool for operationally estimating the maximum wind speeds associated with tropical cyclones. The DVKT itself produces internally consistent results, is reproducible, and has shown practical accuracy given the high cost of in situ or airborne observations. For these reasons, the DVKT has been used in a reas...
متن کاملRemote Sensing and Modeling of Cyclone Monica near Peak Intensity
Cyclone Monica was an intense Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclone of 2006. Although no in situ measurements of Monica’s inner core were made, microwave, infrared, and visible satellite instruments observed Monica before and during peak intensity through landfall on Australia’s northern coast. The author analyzes remote sensing measurements in detail to investigate Monica’s intensity. While Dvo...
متن کاملEstimating Tropical Cyclone Intensity from Infrared Image Data
This paper describes results from a near-real-time objective technique for estimating the intensity of tropical cyclones from satellite infrared imagery in the North Atlantic Ocean basin. The technique quantifies the level of organization or axisymmetry of the infrared cloud signature of a tropical cyclone as an indirect measurement of its maximum wind speed. The final maximum wind speed calcul...
متن کاملReexamination of Tropical Cyclone Wind–Pressure Relationships
Tropical cyclone wind–pressure relationships are reexamined using 15 yr of minimum sea level pressure estimates, numerical analysis fields, and best-track intensities. Minimum sea level pressure is estimated from aircraft reconnaissance or measured from dropwindsondes, and maximum wind speeds are interpolated from best-track maximum 1-min wind speed estimates. The aircraft data were collected p...

The Bureau of Meteorology (the Bureau) has an extensive archive of geostationary satellite imagery, which is derived from a number of data sources. Most of this data now exists in a single data format, namely Man computer Interactive Data Access System (McIDAS) AREA. The McIDAS system was commissioned in the Bureau in 1985 and used to digitise locally received analogue GMS-3 data as its geostat...
